OSTEOPOROSIS

The osteoporosis is a disease mainly affecting the women after the menopause : it is a lack of calcium with an increasing fragility of the bones.Other populations can also be concerned. The treatment is the absorption of one or several tablets of calcium carbonate per day. These tablets have to be taken during all the life of the patient which places the taste criterion as the principle criterion of choice for the patient.

  THE PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET

1. Natural products

The natural calcium carbonate (CaCO3) extracted from the quarry is in reality chalk .

The same type of products is used for the paper industries and the paints or as « filler » for the plastics.

There is only one advantage : its low price. In return, you take a risk as regards to the quality and a possible lack of regularity in the product, this is due to a possible important content of :

  • impurities,
  • heavy metals (due to the extraction techniques and to the composition of the quarry),
  • bacterium.

The other question is the shelflife and the lack of homogeneity of the quarry where the chalk is taken.

2. Synthetic products

  • There is a small number of calcium carbonates used as pharmaceutical quality.
  • In general rules, they have a scalenohedral structure (oblong form) which confers them physical properties useful for the paper and the paint. Nevertheless, this structure doesn’t allow to produce tablets.
  • Moreover, they have an important taste of chalk which is unpleasant and coats tongue and palate.
